Tokyo Travels

After leaving Myron and Mayumi's on Tuesday, I met up with the Heugels, Olsons, and Pablo on Tuesday evening. We had a mini NU reunion. On Wednesday we headed to the Imperial Palace grounds for a walk around the gardens. Inside the palace grounds we took a walk and saw some of the cherry blossom trees coming into bloom. Beautiful. This shot is taken just outside of the palace. The next stop was Tsukiji fish market where we dined on fresh sushi. We ended the day at Harajuku, shopping at the Oriental Bazaar. See what did on Thursday below.

Cherie with her peeps

Traveling with the Heugels and Olsons has been so enjoyable. I think one of the reasons why is that they all enjoy Japan, and Cherie especially has found her people. Cherie has loved being here and fits right in. Look at her catching a few zzzs on the train.

A Disney Day

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I learned that a hearty breakfast will help see one through a tough day. That's what I learned at Tokyo Disneyland. Yes, you heard right. The Heugels, Olsons and I headed to Tokyo Disneyland yesterday. At 6:30 am. During spring break. It really was more of a cultural learning experience than a fun day at the park. The herds of people, the lines, and Japanese fashion were all in full force. I loved it! The pictures below are of the gang at breakfast.

Lunch at the Keio Plaza Hotel

Today Taka joined us for lunch. We went to this expensive place where the food was very traditional. Here's a picture of Taka's lunch. It is a series of small plates with a different food on each plate. Of course I was so impressed with the food that I have no pictures of us. Typical.

Here's a picture of Miku (6 months). Doesn't he have a great head of hair???? It's so thick and black.

Shopping

On Tuesday (3/28)Mayumi and the kids (Ryuka and Miku) took me shopping to Mori Town, near the base. Here's a picture of Ryuka as we're shopping in Mori Town. Mori Town is made up of two shopping complexes with tons of stuff I wanted to buy, but couldn't afford. The coolest thing though, was the parking. You have to pay for parking. After getting a parking stub, you get it validated at a store you purchase from. You take the stub back outside to the parking garage where you insert it into a machine. You don't get the ticket back. You then get in your car and leave. When you get to the exit gate, it automatically lifts if you have paid. Mayumi thinks that there is a camera which takes a picture of your car when you enter. The parkings stub is assigned to your car, and when you insert the stub into the machine, it matches it with the car license plate. When you leave, the camera matches the car to the paid ticket and then lifts the gate. Weird, huh?

On the second day...

Today is day 2 and boy was it long. I left the Minegishi home at about 9:30 am and headed to the train station with one very heavy suitcase. I made it all the way to Tsudayama train station where I got into a car for 2 hours. The destination?? A youth camp. I spoke briefly and then hopped another train for Fussa to see my cousin and his family. Here's my cousin Myron with his son, Miku.

Mako and Taka

I stayed over at Taka's mother's home on the first night. It was a beautiful home. And the breakfast...absolutely delicious. Here's a shot of Taka leaving for work.

The trip...or trips

I was supposed to leave on Friday, 3/24, but got bumped til Saturday. Not a problem except that I had to fly to LA to catch the connecting. The flight for LA left at 7:00 am. It was a long day. I made it into Tokyo at about 8:00 pm. Not bad. Anyway, I'll post some pics.

Prepping for the Trip

I can't believe it buy my trip to Tokyo is coming up this week. Unbelievable. There is no possible way to get everything done before I leave. It looks like I'll be grading papers on the plane. I'm sure I'll be excited once I get there, but the build up to the trip has been a bit stressful. 6 days and counting.

Go Dawgs!

UW Husky beat Illinois today and it's on to the Sweet 16. Gonzaga also advanced by beating Indiana. A good day for Washington basketball.

Aloha 'Oe Uncle Freddie

Growing older has its benefits. I make more money than I did when I was 22, I own a car and home, and I value relationships more. But there is one thing that is inescapable as one gets older, one thing which strikes heartache and tears and that is the inevitable fate of all of us, death. When I was young, I never thought about my own mortality nor did I think of the mortality of others. But as I've aged, once youthful friends of my parents have started to pass away.

Yesterday my family said goodbye to a dear family friend, Uncle Freddie. I've known Uncle Freddie for decades. He and my father worked together years ago and while he had other occupations, I will always remember him as a Waikiki Beach Boy. In the 70s and 80s, Uncle Freddie worked on Waikiki Beach teaching people to surf, paddle canoe, ride catamaran, and anything else that can be done on the beach. During the summer of my 4th and 5th grade year, Uncle Freddie came by to pick up my brother and me and take us to Waikiki. We'd get up at about 5:30 am and Uncle Freddie would get us and drive us the 30 minutes to the beach. We'd spend the whole day there hanging out. During a lull in the day, Uncle Freddie got us surfboards and took us out. He got us seats on a canoe so we could learn to paddle. And if we were good, or obnoxious, he'd get us seats on a catamaran. The days were filled with sun and ocean. We wouldn't come home until 8:00 pm, completely exhausted. It was the best summer.

Over the years Uncle Freddie supported our family by attending family events, graduations and numerous parties. Several years back, Uncle Freddie was diagnosed with throat cancer, which he lived through brilliantly. After my father was diagnosed with liver cancer, he became my father's cancer support buddy. As each recovered from numerous chemo treatments they would plan trips to Vegas...and only Vegas. In fact, they had planned a trip for April.

The last time I saw Uncle Freddie was in December 2005. He attended my graduation party which my parents hosted for me. He looked healthy and handsome, which is how I get to remember him. Growing older has its benefits, but it also has its heartaches.

A number of people attended the service. The shot here is at the end of the service as people are leaving.

Home Sweet Home

Well, I'm back from New England. I had a great time catching up with friends! Sean and Lois taught with me during the GEOS glory years. We headed to SIT at the same time. Bev, a classmate from SIT, is a visiting professor this year at the school. I also spent time with Brian and Tuk. By the way, Brian, thanks for driving me the 1.5 hours to the airport! Not only did I catch up with friends, but I also got to reconnect with faculty. Kathleen Graves, Marti Anderson, Leslie Turpin, and Donald Freeman. What a warm homecoming I had! See below for more info on the trip.

Brian and Tuk

Another highlight of my trip to Brattleboro, VT was the dinner hosted by Brian and Tuk. Brian is originally from Kansas, but has lived in Japan and Thailand. Brian's wife, Tuk, is Thai. Aside from being a new business owner, Tuk is a phenomenal cook. Brian and Tuk invited the MAT 25s for dinner while I was there. Of course there were only 5 MAT 25s but no matter...the food was DeliCoUs! See below for more pics of the dinner.

One regret was that I did not take pics of Brian and Tuk's home. They've done such a good job on the renovations...it's a place I'd want to live.

Tuk made an unbelievable meal of pad thai, chicken satay, shrimp cake, and lemon grass soup.

An Excursion to Putney, VT

Bev and I headed into Putney for a quick bite and a trip to the Green Mountain Spinnery. Here's Bev in front of the Heartstone Bookstore and Cafe.

On the way back to SIT, Bev took a back road. Isn't this just beautiful? I don't think you can see it in the pic, but there were pails nailed into the trees to retrieve the maple syrup. Cool, huh?

The Snow is Melting

This is just a quick note before I dash off to another meeting. While this is my Spring Break, I've been spending it on the campus of the School for International Training (where I went to grad school...the first time). I've been catching up with friends, meeting with faculty, and have set up meetings for research and work. It's been fabulous to be here. Sean & Lois have been generous with their hospitality and I have loved catching up with Bev from South Africa. We are all MAT 25s so there is a lot to talk about. Tonight we get together with Brian and Tuk (Brian is another MAT 25) for a reunion. I'll try to post more pics today.

Greetings from Sunny and Cold Vermont!

Well, I made it. I left Seattle late Friday night (technically Saturday morning) and arrived in Connecticut at about 11:00 am. Sean, my old GEOS pal, picked me up and after a hearty lunch at Taco Bell, we headed up to Brattleboro, VT. By the way, Taco Bell was a treat for Sean as they do not have one in the area where they live. It's been great catching up with everyone, but it really is cold! Check out the pics below.

Bev's Digs

Bev is living on the bottom floor of this beautiful house. She has a room with a bed, desk, and a shower/bathroom. She has a great set up.

Bev of Port Elizabeth Fame

Bev dropped by this morning for brunch. I haven't seen Bev since December of 2000 when I went to visit her in South Africa. She's on a sabbatical from her institution in South Africa and is teaching at SIT for one year. If only the kids were here, too. (Paige: update your blog now!)

Father & Son

Here are Sean and Iain posing for a pic. Sean, Lois and I worked at GEOS together in the 80s. We then went to SIT for school in the early 90s. Those were the days. Things are different now. Sean and Lois have two young ones, and I have a rabbit.

Brian and Tuk's dog stopped by for a visit. Very cute, and very sharp teeth.

Ph.D. Reception

This is quite late in coming, but here it is. Last Sunday, February 26th, the university hosted a Ph.D. reception for me and Wally. My mom got to fly up for the occasion and meet some of my coworkers and friends. I also got to see some old friends. I had a great time talking to Lynn and Dale and to my college friends, Kathy and Marilyn. See below for pics.

Through the connections of my fellow honoree, the Ph.D. reception party was held at the home of a friend. The home, located on Lake Sammamish, has a beautiful view of the water.
